Using Flash in Outdoor Portraiture

Yes! I did indeed use a flash for these shots, and no I did not photoshop the background into the picture.


I used the flash to light my subject but had my shutter speed slow enough that it was open longer then the flash, thus allowing the ambient light to fill in.

Great work Zac! This is a wonderful technique for portraiture. You should try bouncing the flash off a white card or ceiling so the light spreads out onto the subject. The flash fall off will be short enough that it won't affect your background much, and the quality of the light will be softer on the face. Very cool to play around with.
